🛑 The Northern Kentucky Truck Accident Checklist: 7 Essential Steps

A collision on I-75 near the Cut in the Hill or the I-275 beltway is chaotic. Because trucking companies have "Go Teams" of investigators ready to minimize their liability, you need to act fast. Use this checklist to protect your health and your legal claim.

1. Safety & Emergency Services First

  • Call 911 immediately: Even if you think you are "fine," adrenaline masks serious internal injuries.

  • Request a Police Report: Ensure the responding officer (whether Florence Police, Boone County Sheriff, or Kentucky State Police) files an official collision report.

  • Don't Move Unless Necessary: If it is safe, keep the vehicles in place until the police arrive to document the exact point of impact.

2. Identify the "Big Rig" Specifics

Commercial trucks have multiple identifiers. You need more than just a license plate:

  • Carrier Name: Look for the company name on the side of the cab (e.g., Swift, J.B. Hunt).

  • USDOT & MC Numbers: These are usually printed in small text on the driver or passenger door.

  • Trailer vs. Cab: Note if the trailer has a different license plate or company name than the tractor (cab).

3. Visual Evidence (Your Smartphone is Key)

  • The "Big Picture": Take wide-angle photos of the entire scene, including traffic signals, road signs, and weather conditions.

  • Skid Marks & Debris: Photograph any tire marks on the pavement or debris patterns before they are cleared or washed away.

  • Vehicle Damage: Take close-ups of the damage to your car and the truck, including paint transfers.

4. Witness Information

  • Don't Wait: Witnesses often leave once they see emergency lights.

  • Collect Names & Numbers: Get contact info for anyone who stopped. Their "unbiased" perspective is gold in a Northern Kentucky courtroom.

5. Seek Medical Care (The "24-Hour Rule")

  • Visit an ER or Urgent Care: Go to St. Elizabeth (Florence, Edgewood, or Ft. Thomas) or another local facility immediately.

  • Create a Paper Trail: In Kentucky, your Basic Reparation Benefits (PIP) typically cover the first $10,000 of medical bills. Seeing a doctor immediately links your injuries directly to the wreck.

6. The "Golden Rule" of Communication

  • Do Not Admit Fault: Avoid saying "I'm sorry" or "I didn't see you." These can be twisted as admissions of liability.

  • Refuse Recorded Statements: You are not legally required to give a recorded statement to the trucking company’s insurance adjuster. Tell them: "I will have my attorney contact you."

7. Consult a Northern Kentucky Truck Accident Lawyer

  • Preserve the "Black Box": An attorney can send a Spoliation Letter to the trucking company. This legally prevents them from destroying Electronic Logging Device (ELD) data or "Black Box" records that prove speed, braking, and driver fatigue.

Critical "Don'ts" After a Semi-Truck Wreck

  • ❌ DON'T post about the accident on social media (Facebook/Instagram/TikTok).

  • ❌ DON'T accept a "quick check" from an insurance adjuster before knowing the full extent of your injuries.

  • ❌ DON'T wait to file. While the Kentucky statute of limitations is generally two years for motor vehicle injuries, evidence (like dashcam footage) can disappear in days.
